	"description": "In a democracy, we elect a government to make laws and policies that protect our wellbeing and that of our children. However, no matter who we&#x27;ve voted into power, our government has consistently failed to act to avert the greatest threat to all our lives - climate breakdown. After over 30 years of public pressure from everyone from scientists to school children, the government has revealed itself to be a private members&#x27; club for a close circle of friends in politics, fossil-fuelled business and the media, incapable of delivering the action we need. We have flogged this dead horse for long enough. We have to democratise to decarbonise. Only after a full democratic renewal of how decisions are made in this country can we expect real action on keeping global heating below 1.5C. That’s why we’re demanding a binding Citizens’ Assembly on UK democracy. A Citizens’ Assembly will act like a Trojan horse for people, bringing together individuals from all walks of life to discuss and develop a vision for how to share collective power beyond Westminster. This Assembly will: - be made up of randomly selected people from across the country, representative of the UK population - be empowered to deliberate and make proposals on our democracy, with the aim of modernising our democratic system to address the challenges we face - deliver their recommendations to the UK government, which will pledge to address and act upon these proposals",
