	"description": "On Tuesday, November 30th, at its biggest meeting in years, the World Trade Organization could end Big Pharma’s stranglehold on global vaccine production by approving the suspension of COVID-19 intellectual property monopolies. To urge this to happen, public health, labor and other civil society organizations are coordinating a global day of protest and observing a collective moment of silence for those who have died because they couldn’t access vaccines. As part of the November 30th global day of protest, medical students, nurses, doctors and community activists will hold events in numerous cities across the U.S. More than 100 nations support a temporary, COVID-specific waiver of WTO Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) rules. The Biden administration announced its support for this TRIPS waiver back in May, but the European Union, pushed by Germany, continues blocking it. There are some hopeful signs that European government opposition is finally weakening ahead of the upcoming WTO ministerial, being held November 30-December 3 in Switzerland. The full power of the U.S. government must be put into ensuring that an effective TRIPS waiver is achieved as quickly as possible. The world will continue to experience thousands of needless deaths each day and face an ongoing risk of new COVID variants developing until vaccine and treatment production is expanded to as many places as possible.
