"description": "As the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season continues its relentless assault on American communities, Congress is on vacation. While millions of Americans suffer through the aftermath of multiple devastating hurricanes, our elected officials are busy campaigning. The devastation brought by Hurricanes Helene and Milton is truly catastrophic. Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm, causing severe flooding across six states. It's being called North Carolina's "own Hurricane Katrina" due to its widespread effects. Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm, becoming one of the most intense hurricanes on record. It caused extensive damage across Florida and other southeastern states. Hurricane Leslie is currently a Category 2 storm and still strengthening. FEMA's disaster relief fund is critically depleted after this extraordinarily active hurricane season. The agency has already had to impose spending limits, severely compromising its ability to respond to these crises and any future emergencies. Americans in these storms' paths aren't getting a break from this nightmare. They're living it every minute of every day as they struggle to survive and rebuild. The least their representatives can do is provide desperately needed additional aid. Our elected officials need to get their priorities straight. People's lives are more important than a few days of campaigning. Demand Congress return to D.C. immediately and pass substantial additional emergency disaster funding for hurricane relief efforts now.",
