"description": "Who we are: For the Many (FTM) is a statewide coalition of more than 30 organizations working to advance adequate and sustainable funding sources and sound budget practices through policy change and advocacy. The coalition pulls together individual organizations that represent a diverse range of issues and populations across the state. The coalition relies on our collective policy expertise to advocate for budget and revenue priorities as well as serve as a resource for policymakers, stakeholders, and other advocates. Our members include unions, policy experts, environmental groups, anti-poverty advocates, immigrant rights groups, and other community-based organizations from around the state. The problem: Strong communities and modern economies require sustainable investments in jobs, education, housing, transportation, safety net programs, and other basic services that improve our quality of life. New Jerseyans’ well-being and long-term prosperity are built on these fundamentals. Yet, in recent years, we have struggled to make sustainable investments because our budget is out of balance. For one, vital programs and services are underinvested in. And secondly, large tax cuts enacted during the last several decades has affected both state and local tax collections, which have significantly reduced our ability to invest in our communities. At the same time, our state and local tax system remains “upside-down” -- average residents pay a larger share of their income in taxes than higher-income households.   Our solution: Families, communities, and states are strongest when everyone can provide for themselves and their loved ones regardless of their circumstances. It’s time for New Jersey to pursue common sense economic solutions that will build prosperity for all. Together, we are leveraging our collective power to prioritize advocacy and capacity building around raising revenue fairly and ensuring that we have smart, responsible budgets that are sustainably funded. In addition, ensuring that our approaches prioritize racial and economic equity is critical to realizing a New Jersey that works for the many instead of the few. It’s Time to Invest in Our Future: We can continue to make the mistakes of the past or we can reinvest in our communities. If our state truly values its diversity and cares about the working class and disenfranchised, then it will pass a budget that fully funds the assets and services we all rely on. By reversing ill-advised tax cuts, closing corporate tax loopholes, and ensuring the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share, New Jersey has an opportunity to reach its full potential with a budget for the many. Together we will advance a state budget that prioritizes the many, not a chosen few.",
