"description": "MapSO Freedom School is an independent, multi-ethnoracial collective of students, educators, and community members who provide racial and social justice education within Maplewood South Orange, throughout the state of New Jersey and nationally. We express our solidarity with the Palestinian people, and the call for Israel to end the violence against the people of Gaza and stop the displacement at Sheikh Jarrah. We believe that all people should have the freedom to live and worship without the fear of violence and forced expulsion, and as a result, that Palestinians should have the right to return to reclaim their stolen land. As a Freedom School community, our solidarity with the Palestinian people is rooted in the legacy and history of transnational mutual support from U.S. based radical liberation Black Power Movement groups, to the current Movement for Black Lives. This legacy is reminiscent of the organizing that U.S.-based Black radical movements did to stand in solidarity with indigenous South Africans under the terror of the apartheid regime. The most common aspect of those struggles is evident in the use of state sponsored violence in maintenance of a repressive social order. Because we stand firm in our support of Palestinian humanity, not only do we reject any charges of anti-Semitism, but we also maintain that racism and white supremacy are historically the greatest causes and purveyors of anti-Semitism in the U.S. It is because we stand against all forms of racism and white supremacy that we stand firm in our support of Palestinian humanity. As a Freedom School community, we lift up Palestinian humanity and see our collective self. We understand that words matter because language is power. This is not merely a controversial and complex conflict. The reality is that Israel uses state violence, militarism, punitive bureaucracy, and its legal system to expel Palestinians from their rightful homes to remove Palestinian people from their land. Israeli law systematically discriminates against Palestinian citizens of Israel. Palestinians’ ability to travel is controlled by a network of checkpoints, laws, settler-only highways, and a separation wall that continuously consumes occupied Palestinian land. Human Rights groups such as Human Rights Watch have recently concluded that Israeli policies and practices towards Palestinians amount to apartheid. As educators and organizers committed to radical love and another way of being in relationship with each other, void of violence, terror, and dispossession of land and resources, we agree with the City University of New York’s (CUNY) faculty and staff statement where they state, “We wholeheartedly endorse the “Palestine and Praxis” open letter and call to action, affirming our own commitment to speaking out in defense of “the Palestinian struggle as an indigenous liberation movement confronting a settler colonial state,” as well as foundational principles of scholarly integrity and academic freedom. We vow to support those who are most vulnerable to attack for organizing and speaking out on our campuses, including Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and other students, faculty, and staff of color.” It is in this spirit that we continue to be principled in our unwavering dedication to creating a better, more just world. Therefore, we pledge to: Build coalition with individuals and organizations working on behalf of Palestine Initiate, support, and amplify educational opportunities and means to become effective allies Use social media to publicize the current violence and intensify the urgency of supporting Palestinians in their fight against occupation",
