How did municipal socialism emerge at the turn of the 20th century? What dynamics drove its rise and early 20th-century electoral successes? What challenges did it face? What are its legacies and lessons today? Participants will gain deeper insight into municipal socialism’s past, while putting that past into actionable conversation with contemporary socialist politics, including Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign. Instructor biography David Huyssen is an historian and former rank and file union organizer with Unite HERE and UCU. He has taught at the University of York and the New School and is the author of Progressive Inequality. About the NYC DSA Academy for Socialist Education Education, broadly defined, is and always has been a vital function of revolutionary socialist movements. The NYC DSA Academy aims to enhance the ongoing political education efforts of the New York chapter of DSA.
