"description": "Application deadline: March 8, 2026, 11:59 PM / Note: Course is in person only Socialist Ecology: A framework for organizing in New York Instructor: Kurt Semm Dates: Wednesdays, 7–9pm • March 25, April 1, April 8, April 15, 2026 Location: Westside YMCA, Rm. 201, 5 West 63rd Street, New York, NY 10023 Course cost: $35 DSA members / $45 nonmembers Course Description: We are still far from stabilizing global warming and addressing environmental destruction. This failure is systemic. Dominant politics look to markets to fix the problem, embedding major contradictions of prioritizing profit-seeking in proposed “solutions.” The state, a powerful tool to enact the scale of transformation needed, is desperately underutilized. Under Zohran Mamdani, New York has the opportunity to show another way forward. You will leave this course with a deeper understanding of why capitalist approaches to addressing climate change and environmental degradation aren’t working and what solutions we should pursue. We will build climate literacy while helping you break down the problems with current strategies and examine socialist alternatives. We shall then connect this to current organizing projects in New York City for transformative climate solutions that leverage the power of the state. Instructor Biography Kurt Semm is a Senior Economist at the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) and an Assistant Professor at Barnard College, where he teaches environmental economics and political economy. About the NYC DSA Academy for Socialist Education Education, broadly defined, is and always has been a vital function of revolutionary socialist movements. The NYC DSA Academy aims to enhance the ongoing political education efforts of the New York chapter of DSA. Designed to connect the history and theory of socialist struggles with the work of today’s activists, the Academy aims to offer a rigorous but accessible curriculum for working adults to develop their understanding and strategy.",
