We’ve invited our leaders to join us in working toward a livable future, but they have refused to show up. This isn’t anything new - just look at the abysmal options on our ballot this fall. It is clear the system is failing us. It allows a wealthy few to accrue power and abundance while the rest of us struggle to make ends meet. We watch as the leaders we elected to protect us are bought out by multinational corporations that harm us by polluting our communities. This greed is eroding democracy. Our institutions are crumbling. And the health of our communities and our planet are suffering as a result. Yet our leaders are nowhere to be found. They are absent during an emergency that poses an unprecedented existential threat to life on Earth. It is clear that “politics as usual” is failing to meet the challenges we face. That’s why this year, we are calling a people’s assembly. A people's assembly is a structured way for a group of people to discuss issues or make decisions collectively, where all voices are heard and valued equally and no one person or group is able to dominate the discussion. This will be a chance for ordinary people from all walks of life to come together to imagine the future we deserve and then to work together to make it a reality. We need our leaders to act urgently, but if they will not, then we must take matters into our own hands. For it is increasingly clear that the only way to a livable future is by harnessing the collective power of our communities. And that when we unleash this power, the many can defeat the money.
