"description": "The 1/6/21 attack on the U.S. Capitol and state legislatures has been described by the Associated Press as “one of the darkest episodes in American democracy,” and the mob whipped up by Trump and his congressional allies as “a force determined to occupy the inner sanctums of Congress and run down leaders–Trump’s vice president and the Democratic House speaker among them.” The threat of additional fascist violence is serious and growing in the days leading up to the Biden inauguration. Members of Congress were briefed on 11/11/2021 about several serious plots to overthrow the government, including one in which the Capitol would be surrounded by armed insurrectionists who would murder Democrats who tried to enter it. The violence of this homegrown, fascist, white supremacist threat has been fed by Trump, along with federal, state, and local elected officials telling lies about the 2020 presidential election, often explicitly calling for violence or referencing an armed overthrow of the government. A disturbing number of on- and off-duty police officers and other public officials also directly aided or participated in the attack on the Capitol. Every public official and law enforcement association/union has a responsibility to go on record publicly condemning white supremacist violence and the 1/6/21 attack on our democracy. The Pledge I pledge to: Condemn the 1/6/21 attack on the U.S. Capitol and state legislatures around the country, as well as any future attack aimed at overturning the outcome of our elections. Disavow the lies told about our democratic process that incited the mob to attack the counting of electoral votes by Congress, and we condemn all future acts of violence aimed at overturning the outcome of our elections. Commit to using all available resources to stopping white supremacist violence and expelling any colleague or subordinate to participates, shows support for, or allows violence to happen without intervention.",
