"description": "Welcome to the virtual hub for our Indigenous-led Rights of Nature initiative in NC! Rights of Nature laws are a new king of conservation law rooted in Indigenous values, which recognize ecosystems as having legally enforceable rights. They help prevent destructive projects from moving forward, and provide communities with a broader avenue for legal action. Our first goal is for the 2023 Rights for the Haw River legislation to pass and become law in the NC General Assembly. We hope it will set a precedent for ecosystems across the state. We are working with a bipartisan network of community members, grassroots organizations, Indigenous mentors, elected officials and legal experts to advance our Indigenous-led cause. It’s going to be a long road, and one that involves public awareness, education and massive numbers of supporters and volunteers. Please sign up to join the campaign, and stay tuned for announcements, community events and volunteer opportunities. Take action!
