"description": "Public Education Represents a dignified system that gives access to children of all backgrounds and cultures to a learning environment. However, public schools continue to suffer budget cuts & decreased resources. We now face the additional threat of promise scholarships (school vouchers) that divert funds from public schools to private schools. Directly impacting immigrant families who depend on public education as well as rural communities that have little to no access to private education. Politicians falsely claim that vouchers will help working families, but in reality, they only benefit rich and privileged families who already have access to private education. We have been here before. School vouchers were established in the 1950s for white families who did not want their children to attend racially integrated schools. Allowing them to enroll their kids in private schools that were not required to follow federal guidelines. The generations before us, stood for an inclusive & strong public school system. It is now up to us to continue to advocate so that the public school system remains an equitable and accessible environment for the generations to come Promise Scholarships are emerging nationwide, threatening the foundation of public education. This movement has continued to grow due to the current administration's ongoing push for policies to destabilize public schools in the United States. Join MESE in the fight for Public Education by signing this pledge.",
