"description": "Right now millions in the Global South won't get vaccines until 2024. This is not only a form of vaccine apartheid and an urgent racial justice issue affecting the most marginalized people in our world, it is also a threat to people everywhere. Letting COVID-19 run rampant threatens more unnecessary deaths, deadly variants, prolongs pandemic safety restrictions, and trillions of dollars in the global economy. Vaccine development was funded with public money, but pharmaceutical companies seem to think they have a right to privatize the profits. We need 12-14 billion doses distributed this year to people all around the world. To do that, we need to waive patents, share production know-how, and fund vaccine production and distribution. The Biden administration has the power to deliver on all of this. There is already movement to waive the patents. India and South Africa have petitioned the World Trade Organization to temporarily waive intellectual property restrictions that allow a massive expansion in vaccine supply. Over 100 countries support the TRIPS Waiver. Public health experts, Nobel Laureate economists, and over 150 former heads of state are saying that this measure is a key part of the solution. Currently, the US is one of the key roadblocks by opposing the TRIPS Waiver to protect the pharmaceutical industry's profits. Candidate Biden promised prominent health care activist Ady Barkan that patents “absolutely positively” would not get in the way of global vaccine supply. The administration is dragging its feet, though, and has continued to oppose the measure though they are considering shifting course as grassroots and Congressional pressure heat up. Send a postcard to the White House to demand President Biden stand up to Big Pharma and #FreetheVaccine. (Sign up here and we'll either send you a pdf to print your own or send a postcard with your message to the White House!)",
