"description": "Partisan gerrymandering, the practice of drawing electoral maps to unfairly favor a political party, is as undemocratic as it gets. Republicans in recent years have increasingly engaged in this undemocratic tactic rather than trusting voters to make their own choices. In states like North Carolina, we see egregious examples of gerrymandering. Despite a nearly even split in statewide votes in 2020, Republicans have redrawn the map to secure an overwhelming majority of congressional seats. This manipulation not only undermines the will of the voters but also jeopardizes the balance of political power. Texas provides another stark example. In urban areas like Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth, which have seen significant population growth, especially among communities of color, the district lines have been redrawn in a manner that dilutes their voting power. By fragmenting these communities into odd-shaped districts paired with rural majorities, the electoral influence of diverse urban populations is significantly weakened. Attempts to combat gerrymandering through legislative action in recent years have faced roadblocks in Congress. Initiatives like the For the People Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, aimed at addressing this issue, were stymied by Republican filibusters, halting progress towards fairer electoral maps. Gerrymandering poses a direct threat to the principles of democracy, where every vote should carry equal weight, and electoral outcomes should not be predetermined by partisan map-drawing. It's the voters who should choose their representatives, not the other way around. Republicans are reversing this principle, essentially selecting their voters to maintain power. Sign the petition and demand Congress ban partisan gerrymandering!",
