"description": "For decades, Wall Street billionaires have plotted to cut Americans' Social Security benefits—while they themselves pay very little into the program. Now, as Americans learn how unfair this is and call for change, the ultra rich have a new scheme: They're trying to push through the so-called "Six Figure Limit," which would cap Social Security benefits at $50,000 a person and $100,000 per couple. And these numbers won't keep up with inflation. So while this cap would currently impact a tiny number of people, it would hurt more beneficiaries with every passing year. Ultimately, the Wall Street billionaires would achieve their despicable goal: transforming Social Security into a flat, poverty-level benefit. The super wealthy behind this outrageous proposal claim that no one needs that much income in retirement, but we'd love to see them try to live on $50,000 a year! Social Security Works President Nancy Altman told CNBC: "It's younger people who really would be hurt by that proposal, because gradually it would hit more and more people and go to lower and lower levels." And she told the Los Angeles Times: "The $100,000 amount will continue to erode to the point that it is a subsistence level benefit unrelated to prior earnings, just as conservatives have been advocating since 1936." Congress needs to take action to protect Social Security, one of the most popular programs in American history, on which millions of us depend now or will in the future. Social Security is an earned benefit that workers have paid into during their careers. Rather than cutting benefits, our country should expand Social Security to reflect the reality that seniors are facing ever-rising costs for health care, housing, and even basic necessities. Expanding Social Security would lift millions of older Americans out of poverty and provide economic security for all. Sign our petition to tell Congress: Don't cut Social Security! Tax the rich and expand the program!",
