"description": "We are a group of healthcare workers who are united in our support of Chloe Freeman, RN. Freeman is accused of helping a patient who had been detained and injured by ICE to escape custody. The government is now charging her with a federal crime. We stand in solidarity with Freeman and the brave actions she is alleged to have taken. Our job as healthcare workers is to help our patients heal. This includes protecting our patients at each step of the process, from triage, to admission, to discharge. We know that ICE detention is not a safe place to discharge patients. There are countless reports, analyses, and firsthand accounts of horrific abuses that people go through when in ICE custody – even when they’re still in the hospital. Nurses, techs, and other frontline workers are often the first point of contact that a detained immigrant encounters in a hospital. This means they are uniquely positioned to slow or even prevent the person from disappearing into the abusive, neglectful, and virtually impenetrable system that is ICE detention. Many healthcare workers have stories of times they have had to advocate for a patient against pushback from hospital administration and the state. This is no different, except that we live in a worsening authoritarian state under a white supremacist president and his followers, who are determined to wipe out immigrants and other marginalized groups. If Freeman did free this man, then that exemplifies the kinds of courageous acts of solidarity for which we as healthcare workers should be striving for when caring for patients. We call on the federal government to drop the charges against Chloe Freeman. We call on Michigan's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to not punish Freeman or anyone else accused of non-cooperation with ICE.",
