"description": "Students across the country are heading back to school. They deserve to arrive healthy, fed, and ready to learn. Instead, families and schools are beginning another school year under the weight of historic cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. Medicaid is a critical source of health coverage for children and provides $4–6 billion to school districts every year for school-based health services. Schools use Medicaid funding to help provide physical and behavioral health services, screenings, speech and occupational therapy, and other care students need. SNAP helps families afford food and also connects millions of children with free school meals. Cuts to SNAP threaten that connection. Our allies at the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) warn that as children lose SNAP and automatic eligibility for free meals, schools may have a harder time participating in the Community Eligibility Provision, which allows high-need schools to provide breakfast and lunch to every student at no charge. Children cannot learn when they are hungry. They cannot thrive when health care is out of reach. And schools should not be forced to absorb the consequences of federal cuts to programs their students depend on. Click add your name to tell Congress to reverse the harmful Medicaid and SNAP cuts and protect health care and nutrition assistance for children and families. As your constituent, I am urging you to reverse the historic cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program enacted last year and protect nutrition and health care programs that children, families, and schools depend on. As students return to school, these cuts are threatening much more than household budgets. Medicaid is a critical source of health coverage for children and an important source of funding for schools. The U.S. Department of Education reports that Medicaid provides $4–6 billion to school districts every year for school-based services. These funds help schools provide physical, mental, and behavioral health care, screenings, preventive services, speech and occupational therapy, and services for students with disabilities. SNAP is also directly connected to student success. Millions of children who receive SNAP are automatically eligible for free school meals. As children lose SNAP benefits, they can also lose automatic certification for those meals. Children cannot focus, learn, and thrive when they are hungry. Students cannot get the most out of the school day when needed health services are unavailable. I urge you to reverse the Medicaid and SNAP cuts, protect and fully fund nutrition programs, and reject any additional cuts to programs that help children and families meet their basic needs. Students deserve to begin the school year with the food, health care, and support they need to succeed. Thank you,",
