"description": "We are welcoming you to volunteer and join our peer led community safety team that will be running in Mahoning Valley Prides so that all attendees can enjoy a safer space and gain better access to resources of Pride and beyond. This project responds to the general need for guidance and support for the community in these growing festivals and also specifically addresses the mounting threat of physical and verbal assaults by hateful individuals and groups. For this year, we are training people to become “greeters” to welcome all attendees, orient them to the space, and answer questions about the event. The same greeter team will be available to help attendees with concerns or needs and also to walk them to their cars at the conclusion of the event if needed. Greeters are more than simply those who greet our Pride family however; you will also be able to serve as marshals for anything related to the movements of groups of people and also as a set of eyes and ears on the streets for the event. We are training volunteers for two pride festivals in our Valley this year: Warren’s Pride in the Valley (June 17) and this year there will be a new Pride in Columbiana (July 15). We are working with event staff and security to ensure that all our movements are coordinated. About this training There are three parts to the training: marshaling 101, Pride greeter, and in-person. You must complete all three parts to be able to participate as a greeter in 2023. Experienced marshals - or people who have taken a Youngstown Solidarity marshal training in the past - may request to skip the 101. We will provide written materials in advance so you may read them and be ready with questions at the training. The training is following best practices derived from seasoned event marshals in NE Ohio and well-researched guide liness on event security, with a special emphasis on care-based community security for LGBTQAI+ events. Requirements You must be available for all three trainings prior to the event. You must be available for at least one full shift at Pride in 2023 and you must be free from other obligations at that time. Although we we will go over this in the trainings, we strongly suggest our volunteers be even keeled and open to speaking to the public for this role. Questions? Please email youngstownsolidarity@gmail.com The dates for training are as following.
