From autoworkers to city workers in Durham, service and retail workers, and beyond, workers are in motion across industries and stopping work to demand more. Nearly every week, a new battlefront opens up in the working class struggle to challenge the power of the small group of bosses and owners who are pocketing the vast wealth created by our labor and running our workplaces in ways that jeopardize our health and safety or make our lives more difficult. In the midst of rising inflation, soaring costs for housing and other basic necessities, and in the wake of the COVID pandemic where so many of us were told we were essential but our treatment from our employer hasn’t in any way reflected that, it’s no wonder that more and more workers are banding together and taking collective action to say: enough is enough! Fights are being waged on the shop floor for control over our schedules, against wage theft, around health and safety concerns, and more. Workers are hitting the picket line, and whether these struggles are waged by workers without a union or collective bargaining or those who’ve had one or both for some time, it’s clear that workers across the South and the country are taking a more offensive posture than at any time in recent memory. The upcoming Southern Workers School - set to convene in Charlotte, NC on November 10 - 12 - will be an important venue for rank and file workers across the South to exchange lessons from these struggles, take stock of the period, and lay out plans together about how we can take collective action to build organization, unity, and a broader working class movement to build power and organize the South. There are always many costs associated with organizing these types of regional convenings.
