"description": "In just the first month of 2026 alone, 1,000 people were killed by shooters using assault weapons. When an assault weapon and/or a large-capacity magazine is used in a public mass shooting, nearly 14 times as many people are injured, and twice as many people are killed. Since the federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004, the number of high-fatality mass shootings per year has tripled and the number of deaths has quadrupled. That's why Virginia decided to stop waiting for the federal government to take action to save our lives. Both the state House and the Senate have passed bans on assault weapons this year. Only 10 states have bans on assault weapons right now, and just two of those states prevent the sale or manufacture of these deadly weapons. It's time for all of our state legislatures to stop waiting for Washington, D.C., to take action. Write to your state representatives today and tell them: Assault weapons are a danger to the people of our state, and the manufacture, sale, and possession of these deadly firearms must be outlawed. Pass a comprehensive assault weapons ban now!",
