"description": "We live in an age where the digital world holds immense sway over our perceptions, beliefs, and actions. Social media can bring joy and connection to millions, but it’s clear it can also harbor a dark underbelly when accounts such as LibsOfTikTok target LGBTQ+ supporters and institutions, leading to dangerous real-world consequences. Take, for instance, the Highland Park elementary school that found itself in the crosshairs of this account for simply displaying a pride flag. That innocent gesture of solidarity resulted in bomb threats, evacuations of classrooms and entire schools, and terror for young students, their parents and surrounding neighborhoods. Sadly that’s just one example of many. The account has been linked to potentially inciting 66 separate threat events occurring directly after one of their many hateful social media posts.[1] From the Boston Children’s Hospital to local shops in California, any organization or individual that is part of or stands with the LGBTQ+ community is not safe from being targeted and bearing the brunt of the unchecked online vitriol that LibsofTikTok pushes out.[2] What's alarming isn't just the existence of their accounts, but the vast support they garner and the way social media companies amplify them. Over half a million viewers witnessed a single tweet by LibsOfTikTok ridiculing the elementary school on a single platform.[3] And in today’s digital world, hatred isn’t confined to words. Credible bomb threats caused by these posts are direct evidence of the impact as elementary schools sent children home and hospitals have been forced to evacuate.[4] Social media companies must stop giving this group a platform for hate. Inciting violence is not protected free speech. It's essential corporations that allow the public to post on their platforms find a balance to ensure the law is not violated and that the public is not put at risk. TikTok, the social media platform where the group started, understood this and set the precedent by suspending LibsofTikTok for "violating multiple policies, including bullying and harassment, hate speech, and misinformation." But Facebook, Youtube, and X have continued to let this dangerous group spew their violent bigotry without repercussions. These platforms have a legal responsibility to not put children, nurses, teachers, doctors or anyone else’s lives in danger. It’s time for these companies to follow TikTok’s lead. Click ‘START WRITING’ to sign and send a direct message to the CEOs of Meta (Facebook, Instagram, and Threads), Google (YouTube), and X (formerly Twitter) to remove the dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ hate group LibsOfTikTok from their platforms now!
