"description": "European Commission's Betrayal: No End to Unpaid Internship Exploitation After almost 900 days of pleading to end unpaid internships, the European Commission's proposal revealed on March 20 is a major letdown. What is going on? The proposal of the European Commission aims to ensure fair pay only for those interns who have completed their education and who are already getting paid. The Commission is completely ignoring all students and those getting nothing for their labour. This proposal is a betrayal to the youth. It may improve conditions for some, but let’s be honest here, this will push those employers who are paying their interns a small amount of money to stop paying them. This proposal shamelessly rewards exploiters, encouraging employers to cut intern pay without consequences. While young people are exploited by working for free, many of us are also struggling to afford a decent place to live, to pay for our bills or just simply to buy food. Many are forced to take up debts or find additional sources of income. Unpaid internships are a slap in the face of justice, shutting out those who can't afford to work for free and allowing for exploitation within EU legislation. Only the most privileged of interns, who can rely on parental support, cheap housing and financial security can afford an unpaid internship and even then, we are still talking about exploitation. Why is the Commission doing this? The Commission argues that workers are not those who work, but those who work and receive a wage. Therefore, interns who are not being paid, are not workers. And if technically they are not workers, nothing indicates that they should receive a fair pay. Our question is: Is it not enough to work to be a worker? The Commission's twisted logic is unacceptable. Unpaid work isn't just a harmless oversight—it's exploitation. This is not what we asked for. This is not what we were promised. Send an email to Nikolas Schmit, the commissioner submitting this proposal and push the commission to withdraw and change their unjust proposal. Ban unpaid internships now!",
