"description": "California Arts organizations have suffered for years from under-investment. The state ranks just 28th in state arts funding on a per capita basis - and that underfunding was particularly damaging when the pandemic shut down much of the last arts over two years. Even while the economy remained fairly healthy in 2022, the number of live arts organizations are shrinking. For example, North Hollywood has gone from 14 theaters before the pandemic to just six, according to the Theatre Producers of Southern California. Without immediate support, more live arts organizations will close, more jobs will be lost, and our communities will suffer. When the live arts succeed, they provide an economic boost to their local communities. According to Americans for the Arts, the average nonprofit live arts attendee spends another $31.47 beyond the cost of admission per person every time they see a show. Investments in the live arts are investments in our local communities. In the last legislative session, Gov. Newsom signed SB 1116, an innovative new approach to public funding for small nonprofit arts organizations (SNPAOs) that establishes the Equitable Payroll Fund, a grant program that provides reimbursements of payroll expenses. This new model for arts funding will support jobs for anyone hired as an employee by a SNPAO and provide necessary stability for the live arts sector. That's where you come in: ask your representatives in the California legislature to support our $50 million budget request to launch the Equitable Payroll Fund. Together, we're going to strengthen the live arts industry in California.",
