"description": "Vancouver’s ABC-dominated Council could soon give a green light to (another) mass rezoning, impacting local neighborhoods city-wide. There is only one public hearing on this proposal on Tuesday, May 5 (6pm). This could be your last chance to tell Council what you think. City Hall wants to rezone nearly 2,400 parcels into a new district – with incentives to developers – to fast-track 6- and 8-storey market rental buildings and small hotels along neighbourhood corridors. And no more public hearings on future projects. This will impact corridors along Main St., Fraser St., East Hastings St, Victoria Drive, Nanaimo St., Renfrew St., Commercial Drive, W. 10th Ave, W. 4th, Dunbar St., Alma St., W 41st., Granville St., Oak St., Cambie, and Kingsway, among others. What’s the problem? Many distinctive local neighbourhood businesses, tenants, and existing renters living above shops could be displaced. Mass upzoning will likely increase land values. Unaffordable rentals. City Hall wants to cut the 20% requirement for below-market units. Hotels will get special treatment with city incentives. No public hearing required. Limited community input into these plans. However, the City provided a special open house for developers. No analysis or monitoring of potential negative impacts related to mass rezoning, nor public estimates showing value of upzoning and incentives to developers. City Hall has already approved thousands of market rentals and hotel rooms. We need deeply affordable housing – not developer handouts. Use our writing tool to send a letter to Council. Let them know you oppose this plan! ",
