This registry was first codified in law in 1929 and has been modified various times by Congress. The most recent change was by President Reagan&#x27;s Administration in 1986, bringing the registry date up to 1972. On July 20th, 2022, Rep Zoe Lofgren and 45 other Representatives introduced H.R. 8433 the &quot;Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929&quot;, which would will create a rolling registry date, allowing immigrants that have been in the U.S. for at least seven years and meet other requirements to file an application for registry. This simple update to existing Section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act would allow up to 8.5 million people to obtain residency and get on a pathway to Citizenship.
