"description": "Caption: Redress and Lincoln for Fair Housing staff canvassing in support of Lincoln’s anti-discrimination ballot initiative last year. Everyone deserves a safe place to live, regardless of race, zip code, or what lawful income they use to pay for it. Unfortunately, the landlord lobby and their friends in the Nebraska Legislature want to legalize housing discrimination that will most harm renters who are Black and Brown, people with disabilities, families with children, and veterans. Sen. Dover’s (Dist.19, Norfolk) LB809 would invalidate the will of Lincoln voters, who recently passed a law to protect renters from discrimination based on the type of income they use to pay rent. The bill would also prevent any other city in Nebraska from protecting its residents from discrimination. Source of Income non-discrimination laws, like the one Lincoln passed with over 66% approval, prevent landlords from discriminating against people solely because they use disability benefits, social security, veterans benefits, housing vouchers, or any other lawful source of income to help pay for housing. The Redress Movement and our allies have been organizing for a similar law in Omaha, but these laws would be helpful in rural areas too. In Sen. Dover’s hometown of Norfolk, half of the families issued housing vouchers last year had to return the voucher because they couldn’t find a landlord to accept it. That’s both discriminatory and a waste of resources while so many of us struggle to afford our homes. LB809 has its first hearing on February 4th. Speak up and let the legislature know we need statewide protections, not statewide discrimination.",
