"description": "While ICE continues to operate throughout Rockland County and terrorize our immigrant communities, Rockland County legislators have yet to schedule the “Safety and Dignity for All Act” for a public hearing. This is an abject failure of governance and highlights the deep fissures that exist between the people of Rockland County and those we elected to look after ALL Rocklanders. Due to ICE’s campaign of abuse and harassment, our county has seen approximately 100 removals per month. Many of our immigrant neighbors are choosing not to access critical public services or seek help when they need it out of fear that they will run into ICE and be disappeared. East Ramapo Central School District has experienced an extraordinary uptick in its absentee rate, with students and their families being forced to choose between education and safety. Passing the “Safety and Dignity Act” is the bare minimum. The bill will place limitations on how sheriff’s deputies and county employees collaborate with ICE and create provisions for greater county transparency. Westchester County has already passed similar legislation and serves as a model for Rockland’s “Safety and Dignity for All Act”. County legislators must recognize that Rocklanders will stand by their immigrant neighbors no matter what and that we expect our electeds to do the same. Sign the letter to Rockland County Legislators calling on them to schedule a public hearing on the “Safety and Dignity for All Act” and to support the passage of legislation that will protect our communities.",
