"description": "Resident Assistants (RAs) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute make crucial contributions to the RPI community. Their role extends far beyond merely overseeing dormitory living; RAs ensure the health, safety, and well-being of thousands of students residing on campus. In March 2023, in a resounding demonstration of solidarity and purpose, 86% of RAs voted in favor of unionizing. This decision reflected RAs collective resolve to seek recognition and fair compensation for their substantial contributions to campus life. On October 24, RAs delivered a petition to the RPI administration, demanding a stipend of $5,100 per semester that was emphatically supported and signed by an overwhelming 96% of Resident Assistants at RPI. This strong, unified backing from our team serves as a clear indicator of our collective commitment to this cause and the urgent need for a fair and timely response from the administration. As RPI plans to respond to our proposal, we urge RPI administrators to support the RPI RA Union’s demands a fair compensation package including: Housing:Provide Housing at no cost to RAs, including no loss of RPI financial support. This is a requirement of the position and should continue. A Full Meal Plan: A full meal plan is essential for well-being and effectiveness of RAs. A Stipend of $5,100 per Semester: 20 hours per week of work at New York’s minimum wage of $15 per hour. RAs are the frontline of student engagement, mental health advocacy, crisis response, and community building. The administration’s recognition and fair response to our demands are not merely about enhancing working conditions; it's about respecting and valuing the indispensable human element that RAs bring to the student experience at RPI. This is about ensuring the sustainability of a living and learning environment that lives up to the reputation and standards of RPI. We stand united and call upon the RPI administration to engage with us constructively and respond justly to these demands. We believe in the mission and values of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and we urge the institute to demonstrate its commitment to these values by supporting those who work tirelessly to uphold them.",
