"description": "When Donald Trump appointed Republican mega-donor Louis DeJoy as Postmaster General of the United States in May of 2020, he became the first Postmaster in more than two decades with zero prior experience in the USPS. After slowing the mail before the 2020 election, causing a national outcry that led to legal action and hundreds of protests nationwide, he then embarked on a ten-year “improvements” plan that was really designed to lead to full privatization of the USPS.[1] Already, the results have been disastrous for communities, consumers, and small businesses across the U.S. who count on the USPS for timely deliveries of things like medicines, paychecks, laboratory results, and direct to consumer goods. The fact is -- only the USPS Board of Governors can actually fire DeJoy and allow President Biden to nominate a replacement. Up until now, despite massive public pressure, the Board has withstood pressure to take action. Recent developments may finally be driving a change. A bipartisan group of 26 Senators -- including 13 Republicans -- demanded DeJoy stop plans to consolidate sorting centers, redirect mail processing and slow down the mail, highlighting the dangerous impact those changes had on mail-in ballots. Then, the Save the Post Office Coalition joined in sending 440,327 direct messages to the USPS Board, Inspector General and the Postal Regulatory Commission. The joint pressure of Congress and regulators, backed up by our coalition, stopped Louis DeJoy from implementing his plan -- at least for now -- when the USPS announced plans to pause changes until 2025. Now, some members of Congress are using this moment to recharge the demand to remove DeJoy completely. It’s long past time for a new Postmaster General at USPS, but to succeed, we need a flood of congressional leaders to echo the call to action. Help build an overwhelming chorus that the Board of Governors can’t ignore.
