"description": "New York is at the center of a highly vulnerable region to the impacts of climate change. There has been a serious increase in annual precipitation and heavy rainfall, with both projected to keep increasing over the century. The reality is that many of the projections are slowly becoming realized. Flooding events are the most common climate-related hazard across New York, such as Hurricanes Irene, Sandy, and Ida. In fact, according to the 2024 The New York State Climate Impacts Assessment, storms previously considered “once-in-100-year” events have happened nearly twice as often as expected in recent years. Our infrastructure is not prepared to withstand these impacts. This is why Waterfront Alliance and the Rise to Resilience Coalition strongly urge our State Assemblymembers to support The NY Rain Ready Act. The purpose of this bill is to remove the legal ambiguity in the jurisdiction of local water & sewer authorities to manage our stormwater. With this, these entities can implement programs directly related to stormwater and can divert funds into reducing runoff pollution, expanding sewer systems performance, and expanding green infrastructure. The Rain Ready Act is one of many solutions to a complex issue. It allows us to take the first step towards reducing the risk of local flooding, especially in the face of climate change. Let’s take this step together and get New York rain ready, now! Please join us in asking Speaker Heastie and all Assemblymembers to pass The New York Rain Ready Act bill in the Assembly (A9435) before the end of session!",
