"description": "The Grand Staircase-Escalante Inter-Tribal Coalition is sounding the alarm about a new threat to their sacred ancestral lands. In order to open up the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to resource extraction, Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT) and other Utah Representatives are trying to throw out the monument’s current Resource Management Plan. Tribes were meaningfully involved in developing the management plan, which provides a clear roadmap for protecting and conserving nearly 2 million acres of slot canyons, stone arches, sacred petroglyph panels, plants for medicines that Native peoples continue to use today, and ecosystems for animals and pollinators. Some Utah Representatives want to open up these sacred ancestral lands to development and harmful resource extraction. They intend to introduce a “resolution of disapproval” in the U.S. House of Representatives soon, which could dismantle the Tribe-shaped management plan for the monument -- in violation of Tribal sovereignty and ignoring Tribal voices. If this passes, according to the Congressional Review Act, any future plan would have to be substantially different! We’ve drafted a message that you can send directly to Congress to lift up Tribes demands. If you can, please add a sentence to personalize it so it’s even more powerful. Click “START WRITING” to send a message to your Representative today: Uphold Tribal sovereignty and protect the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.",
