"description": "We have learned in the past week that the Virginia Department of Behavioral HEALTH and Developmental Services intends to eliminate the Office of Recovery Services effective July 1, 2025. This is not just a bureaucratic reshuffle; it is a direct assault on years of advocacy and a profound disservice to every Virginian, especially those of us (and our allies) in sustained recovery from a variety of mental health, substance use, and developmental challenges who have dedicated our lives to improving the care people we love receive. ORS is the culmination of a powerful, unified movement – forged by individuals with lived and living experience, dedicated Peer Recovery Specialists, supportive friends and family members, committed behavioral health professionals, visionary elected officials, devoted public servants, and vital advocacy organizations. It represents our collective understanding that recovery is not just possible, but essential for a thriving, effective and efficient Virginia. To dissolve this office is to throw away years of hard-learned, internationally recognized best practices. It is detrimental, harmful, and a dangerous step backward for the Commonwealth. We implore you to send these letters to the decision-makers and their influencers to reverse this decision and recognize the invaluable role that the Office of Recovery Services plays in our communities. Demand that DBHDS reverse this calamitous decision. The time for action is now. Let our voices be heard. You have the power to help protect the future of recovery in Virginia. Please sign this letter and forward it all your friends and family who support Wellness and Recover in Virginia. Thank you! Your Virginia Recovery Advocacy Project State Organizing Team",
