In Houston, an ICE agent killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo while he was driving his construction crew to work. The other men in his van dispute the federal government’s claim that he attempted to run over an agent, and ICE officers were not wearing body cameras. Days later, an ICE agent killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero near his home in Maine, even though he was not the person agents had originally set out to arrest and he reportedly had work authorization in the US. These killings expose the danger created by the Trump administration’s escalating attacks on immigrants. Armed federal agents are carrying out aggressive raids in residential neighborhoods and other ordinary community spaces, often without body cameras, meaningful transparency, or cooperation with local investigations. The Trump administration has also eliminated federal protections that discouraged immigration raids in schools, hospitals, houses of worship, and other sensitive locations. That decision has left students and families wondering whether morning drop-off, a parent-teacher conference, or a school event could result in detention, violence, or permanent family separation. State legislators must protect public school communities by passing legislation that: Bars ICE and other civil immigration agents from entering public school property without a judicial warrant or a genuine emergency involving immediate danger. Prohibits schools from voluntarily sharing student or family information with immigration authorities. Protects school buses, parking lots, athletic events, early childhood centers, and other school-related spaces from ICE raids.
