"description": "In a democracy, voters should choose their members of Congress, not whichever political party currently in charge or partisan lawmakers trying to expand their power. But that’s not how Donald Trump wants it. Now, Republican leaders in key states are considering redistricting congressional districts to please Trump, wedge out Congressional Democrats, and add more winnable seats for Republicans. In Texas, they’ve already started. Governor Greg Abbott called a special session – not to fix their inadequate natural disaster early warning system that helped lead to the deaths of at least 135 people during the flooding this July – he called lawmakers back to the capital to redraw the maps and rig districts in Republican’s favor. It doesn’t have to be this way. States like California and New York have passed laws requiring a non-partisan committee create congressional maps based on census data, not political affiliation. It’s time for Congress to put these attempts to steal voters and rig elections to rest for good. Check out our new report on what’s happening in Texas right now and then sign and send a message demanding Congress pass legislation mandating non-partisan independent redistricting nationwide now.",
