"description": "For over a century, the federal government's Indian Boarding School policies aimed to destroy Native communities, languages, and cultures, leaving a lasting impact on generations that continues today. An extensive study released last year attempted to compile an accurate record of the harm caused by the genocidal boarding school system. They found, after hearing from survivors and their families and conducting a thorough investigation of government records, that at least 973 Native children died at 417 schools across 37 states or territories. The report showed the federal government spent the equivalent of $23 billion in today’s dollars on the boarding school system. Imagine if that money had been invested in our communities instead of spent on removing our children. Now, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski has introduced the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act of 2025 with the bipartisan support of 22 Senators, including Democrats Elizabeth Warren, Mark Kelly, and Mazie Hirono. This landmark legislation would establish a federal commission to investigate, document, and acknowledge the historical harms created by this dark legacy. It would: Creates a commission to investigate the Indian Boarding School Era Conduct a comprehensive investigation Hold safe, public or private convenings Make recommendations to Congress Locate Native American children and records Uplifts the voices of Indian Boarding School Survivors Make a final report publicly available Passage of this bill would also be a vital step toward healing and rebuilding trust with Native communities.
