"description": "On August 5th, in South Fulton County, Devon Anderson was trying to deescalate a situation outside of a club when off-duty Atlanta Police Officer Melvin Potter shot him three times with his service weapon and killed him. This never should have happened. Melvin Potter had abundantly displayed he had no business being an officer after a history of DUIs. In one case, he was going over 100 miles per hour drunk, got pulled over in Coweta County and attempted to use his officer Atlanta Police Department (APD) badge to get off the hook. But APD kept him on the force and then, after murdering Devon, he was only charged with obstruction of the law for refusing to take a breathalyzer test. He was out of jail that night. We all know how this would have gone down if the tables were turned. Nobody should be above the law – but time and time again it seems the APD is.   Devon’s Mother, Valerie, and Devon’s friends and family are seeking justice – and they need our communities’ help. Instead of answers and action, they’re getting the run-around at every turn – nobody is taking accountability for his murder. Atlanta City Council claims there’s nothing they can do because his murder occurred in South Fulton County, and everyone seems to be waiting to do anything until the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) completes an investigation. On Monday September 23, at the Atlanta City Council Public Safety Committee, Devon’s family was informed that the Georgia Bureau of Investigations had completed the investigation and that they turned it over to the Atlanta District Attorney’s Office to charge Melvin Potter with murder. Will you take 5 minutes to email and call the Atlanta DA’s office to put the pressure on Fani Willis to move forward with charges and get this killer APD officer off our streets?",
