"description": "DC Council is considering severe cuts to DC’s universal paid leave program, which enables non-government workers to take the time they need to care for themselves or a loved one. Mayor Bowser has proposed halting all new claims for medical and family leave for an entire fiscal year. When these benefits resume, the maximum weeks of leave would decrease from 12 to 8 weeks for medical leave and 6 weeks for family leave. The proposed cut would also permanently cap the maximum weekly benefit for paid leave recipients and eliminate the annual inflation adjustment, eroding the benefit’s value over time. By gutting universal paid leave, lawmakers would hurt DC’s economy, small businesses, and workers, and exacerbate existing racial and gender economic and health disparities. Contact your DC Councilmembers now to urge them to keep the universal paid leave program whole",
