"description": "The U.S. House of Representatives just voted to pass the dangerous Mining Regulatory Clarity Act, which would give profit-hungry mining companies a statutory right to permanently occupy and bury tons of toxic waste on Indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands and waters. The Mining Regulatory Clarity Act would also grant mining companies automatic rights-of-way for destructive infrastructure, such as new pipelines, transmission lines, and roads across our public lands. This would take away opportunities for Tribal input and undermine current policy that requires mining companies to receive a permit for such uses, just like any corporation operating on federally-managed public lands. Giving even more free reign to mining corporations to do whatever they want would be disastrous for climate justice and an attack on Native sovereignty. Already, toxic mining projects threaten Native peoples’ health, traditional resources, and ability to self-govern. Public opposition succeeded in delaying the bill, but it ended up passing when brought for a vote a second time. Now we need to make sure it does not pass the Senate.
