"description": "To honor the National Day of Remembrance of Indigenous Boarding Schools, we’re lifting up the bipartisan Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act. If passed, this bill will create a commission to investigate and report on the history of boarding schools and the long-term effects of boarding school policies on Native peoples in the United States. The commission will recommend steps the federal government can take to address boarding schools’ ongoing harms and help survivors, their descendants, and their communities heal. This bill passed the Senate in the last session of Congress (2023-2024) with bipartisan support, but the House of Representatives did not vote on it. Now, it has a real chance of coming to the floor for a vote and passing in the Republican-controlled House and Senate -- because Republicans in this current session of Congress (2025-2026) are the original sponsors. In the House, Tom Cole (Chickasaw) and Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk), the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Native American Caucus, are leading this bill. Sharice said: “I would not be here without the resilience of my ancestors and those who came before me – including my grandparents, who survived federal Indian boarding schools. Their experiences are not distant history; they shape our families and communities today.” Please click ‘START WRITING’ to sign and send a message to your members of Congress urging them to support the Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act and to urge House and Senate leadership to bring the bill to the floor for a vote.",
