"description": "Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community, and our nation’s health and safety regulations are designed to protect us at home and work, ensure our drinking water is clean and keep the air we breathe healthy. But a national defense bill that the U.S. House of Representatives must pass before the end of the year aims to allow the Trump-Vance administration to circumvent any federal, state, or local health and safety protections in the name of “national defense.” This year, Congress is due to reauthorize the Defense Production Act, a bill that supports many areas of national defense and preparedness. But the House’s proposal includes a dangerous provision that would give a free pass to pollute for projects that the administration says are necessary for national defense or its non-existent energy emergency. But we can’t let legislators sneak in this poison pill. Even without this bill, the Trump-Vance administration is already claiming it has the right to ignore regulations in the name of its so-called national energy emergency and other national defense needs. The defense bill that passed the House in July includes a 5-year extension of the Defense Production Act without any changes — failing to protect our communities from this abuse of executive power. Congress should be working to tighten laws to protect our health and safety from these actions, not letting the status quo stand or opening the door to even more harm. Tell your members of Congress: Don’t give polluters a free pass to harm our communities!",
