"description": "On May 19, 2026, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) proposed a draft operating and prevention of significant deterioration permits for the Shell Alpha Olefin Plant expansion in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. If approved, Shell Chemical LP will be reauthorized to operate the ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol units; which would add 1.2 million tons per year of monoethylene glycol (MEG) production at Shell's Geismar facility. The plant already has a 2 year exemption from the Hazardous Organic National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants Rule (HON Rule), meaning they are exempt from monitoring, reporting and emissions limits meant to protect public health. Almost half of the HON Rule exempt plants are located in Louisiana in what’s known as “Cancer Alley.” We cannot allow LDEQ to approve this permit! Use this form to send a public comment to them before Tuesday, June 23rd at 4:30pm CT.",
