	"description": "The State of Maine along with private entities have spent over $100 Million dollars trying to address contamination from PFAS in Maine. Our drinking water, irrigation water, soil, and blood have been poisoned through the irresponsible use of PFAS in products, fire fighting foam, and land applied sludge. Because of this history, Maine has defined PFAS in the most protective manner possible, and passed a law to prohibit the use of PFAS containing pesticides in our state. In spite of our laws, as well as the clear and preset danger to our health and pocketbooks from PFAS, it has been reported that the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is intending to use these dangerous PFAS pesticides in several of our lakes this summer. The health effects of PFAS are well documented, including multiple types of cancer, fertility issues, cholesterol issues, and dramatic effects on developing fetuses and young children. The Maine Legislature banned the use of PFAS pesticides because of these dangers. Despite that the law has yet to go into full effect, Maine agencies should tread with utmost caution when applying PFAS to water because of its harm to the ecosystem and the likelihood of contamination of drinking water or people who swim or recreate in those surface waters. In light of all of these facts, we urge the DEP to find alternative methods to control the water weeds in these lakes. Do not continue our generational legacy of PFAS contamination of our land and waters, and understand that Maine has laws on the books to protect the people of Maine because we have a special distinct history with PFAS that the federal government does not recognize.",
