	"description": "As news stories out of states like Illinois, Florida, and Wisconsin showed, we need to be taking proactive steps to make sure that we can have high-turnout elections in September and November while protecting public health. In other words, we need to &quot;pandemic-proof&quot; our elections. The Massachusetts Legislature took important initial steps for municipal and special legislative elections: expanding early voting, shortening the voter registration blackout period, and making it easier for voters to cast their ballots absentee. We need to build on that for the fall. What does that mean? *Expanding options to vote by mail so that no one has to choose between their health and participating in our democracy. Bills like SD.2912 (Rausch): An Act establishing vote by mail in 2020, SD.2911 (Creem): An Act relative to voting by mail and early voting, and HD.4957 (Mark/Sabadosa): An Act relative to the 2020 state primary and general election offer great models. *Eliminating the voter registration deadline, because many opportunities to register to vote (or register new voters) will be foreclosed upon due to the necessary rollback of public life *Increasing the number of days of early voting, because a longer early voting period allows for better line maintenance, which is essential in a time of physical distancing",
