"description": "Marylanders need our state leaders to act now. Please contact your state senator and urge them to support a statewide data center moratorium during the Special Session in August. Communities across Maryland are already sounding the alarm. Multiple counties have passed or considered moratoriums to pause data center development, and at least one county has moved to ban data centers outright. Local governments are taking these steps because residents are deeply concerned about the enormous electricity and water demands of data centers, diesel backup generator pollution, noise, land-use impacts, rising utility costs, and the risk that data centers could undermine Maryland’s greenhouse gas reduction goals and public health protections. Maryland should not rush into approving massive new energy-intensive AI data centers before the public has clear answers about impacts on the electric grid, climate commitments, environmental justice communities, Chesapeake Bay protections, and the health and quality of life of nearby residents. A temporary statewide moratorium would give lawmakers the time needed to study these impacts, set responsible standards, and ensure that communities—not just industry—have a meaningful voice in decisions that will shape Maryland’s future. New York just passed a moratorium, now it is time for Maryland to show leadership. Take action today! Call your Senator now or email them using this action alert, to use the August 3–5 special session to protect Maryland residents by supporting a statewide data center moratorium.
