"description": "The recent spike in people being killed while traveling on our streets is tragic, unacceptable, and preventable. Crashes are preventable, and it is a choice to design our streets to prioritize speed instead of human lives. We are calling on our elected leaders to take action to make sure everyone gets home safely to their loved ones. 1. Improve visibility and reduce speeding at intersections. Poor visibility and fast turning vehicles lead to many fatalities and serious injuries every year. Adopt a policy where every intersection receives improved visibility and reduced speeding through physical daylighting when changes are being made to it. The space created by these visibility improvements can be used to add bike/scooter parking, rain gardens, or pedestrian rest areas. 2. Make large trucks less deadly. With two recent fatalities involving large trucks, we need a policy mandating side guards. Side guards can prevent people walking or biking from being pushed underneath a turning truck and then run over by the back wheels. Seattle has had a policy for its municipal fleet for a decade, and should expand these requirements to all contractors who work for the city of Seattle, like Waste Management. The city can also push the Washington State Legislature to require that all large trucks operating in the state have sideguards. 3. Actually put Vision Zero first. Every mayor and SDOT director since 2015 has said safety is the top priority. But that’s not reflected in how SDOT manages its own major projects. Too often safety is an addition and an afterthought in the toothless Complete Streets process. Major projects should have to pass a review with an independent Vision Zero team that has the power to stop projects from moving forward until they are improved. Furthermore, the transportation levy should be reprioritized to frontload the delivery of safety projects for dangerous streets across the city. Thank you for taking action. These changes will save lives.",
