"description": "Last year, U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Perry was convicted of first degree murder -- and sentenced to 25 years in prison -- by a unanimous Texas jury for shooting and killing Black Lives Matter protester Garrett Foster. Perry drove his vehicle into a crowd of protestors during a rally in 2020 and then fired five shots through his driver side window when Foster approached the vehicle. Now, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has pardoned the convicted vigilante in a shocking, disgusting, and dangerous assault of the rule of law, the right to protest, and the safety of anyone who dares to challenge the extreme policies of the right-wing. To make it worse, not only has this convicted murderer been freed, Governor Abbott also restored Perry’s gun rights.[1] The details in this case are as unseemly as you would expect. Perry considered himself an avowed racist. Court documents reveal he posted on social media: “It is official I am a racist because I do not agree with people acting like animals at the zoo.” In another comment posted the same day, he compared BLM protesters to “a zoo full of monkeys”. It’s not hard to figure out exactly who he thinks he’s talking about, but in case you aren’t sure, a friend of Perry asked him if he could “catch me a negro daddy.” Perry replied, “That is what I am hoping.”[2] The trial also revealed Perry texted a friend before the murder “I wonder if they will let [me] cut the ears off of people who’s decided to commit suicide by me.” If that didn’t make it clear enough that Foster’s murder was a premeditated act, Perry also tweeted a few weeks earlier he might have to “kill a few people on my way to work” and he “might go to Dallas to shoot looters.” This is Trump’s America: Premeditated murder based on racist political differences, defended, lauded, and excused by a Republican governor. In a 7-2 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld an exception to the Fifth Amendment's ban on "double jeopardy," allowing a state and the federal government to each prosecute an individual for the same action if that action violates both state and federal laws.[3] That means, Attorney General Merrick Garland can restore the rule of law and use the power of the federal government to effectively overturn Abbott’s pardon by prosecuting Daniel Perry immediately. Click ‘START WRITING’ to sign and send your direct message to the Department of Justice and Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding the federal prosecution of convicted vigilante Daniel Perry now.
