"description": "There is currently a crisis of labor rights violations affecting immigrant workers nationwide who fear retribution for reporting wage theft, health violations, sexual harassment, and discrimination. Since day one of the Biden Administration, NDLON day laborer centers and worker rights organizations called for immediate use of existing executive authority to protect immigrant workers - by stopping deportations and granting work authorization - for those who are witnesses or victims of workplace abuse. Day laborer worker centers consistently raised the issue both publicly and directly with DHS and the Labor Department, rallying on the steps of the Labor Department in Washington, DC Last fall, when Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas directed his entire department to implement policies facilitating labor rights enforcement, we launched a Blue Ribbon Commission on Immigrant Work. The commission consisted of workers and advocates from day laborer centers across various industries and cities nationwide who organized multiple assemblies, public hearings and demonstrations calling for the protection of immigrant workers. The hearings highlighted the extent of workplace abuse in factories, warehouses, restaurants, fields, and construction sites; the extent of wage theft across industries; and the rampant violations of health and safety standards in dangerous workplaces or in the middle of natural disasters, and a report was created and hand delivered to DHS Secretary Mayorkas and Labor Secretary Walsh by NDLON Co-Director Nadia Marin Molina. Some of the members of the commission continued fighting their own cases, like those from Arriba Las Vegas and Georgia Familias Unidas, utilizing existing mechanisms to have DHS to use its discretion based on involvement in an existing labor investigation. And on July 6, 2022, the US Department of labor issued guidance, in the form of an FAQ, for immigrant workers denouncing workplace abuse and unsafe work conditions. But DHS has yet to take a formal position or issue guidance on the policy. It is urgent that DHS stand by its word and announce its policy to protect immigrant whistleblowers from retaliation. Today, workers nationwide are taking action to demand worker migrant justice. Will you join us?",
