"description": "Florida manatees, gentle, slow-moving icons of our coastal waters, rivers, and springs, are facing mounting threats. Congress could make their future even more uncertain. Each year, manatees depend on warm-water refuges, healthy seagrass beds, and clean waterways to survive. These habitats provide the food, shelter, warmth, and migration corridors manatees need to rest, reproduce, and raise their young. But pollution, habitat loss, watercraft strikes, and climate-driven ecosystem changes are already pushing this vulnerable species to the brink. Now, progress to protect manatees is under threat. Some members of Congress are advancing the ESA Amendments Act (H.R. 1897), a dangerous bill that would weaken the Endangered Species Act in many ways, including by damaging the definition of “best available science” in protecting critical habitat. Depleting scientific integrity in the Act would undermine recovery efforts not only for manatees, but for hundreds of imperiled species nationwide. At a time when manatees are experiencing: Loss of essential warm water habitat that manatees need to survive the winter Repeated unusual mortality events and starvation linked to seagrass loss Increasing boat strikes and habitat degradation Growing pressure from warming waters and coastal development Ignoring science is a risk this species cannot afford. We should be strengthening protections for manatees—not weakening the law that helps keep them from extinction. Email your U.S. House Representative today and urge them to oppose H.R. 1897 and defend the Endangered Species Act.",
