"description": "Thanks to former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native to run the department, public grazing land was opening up under her expansive Biden-era order to “restore wild and healthy populations of American bison.” She emphasized that the process would “prioritize Tribally led opportunities” and “advance shared stewardship with Tribes on federal land.” Now, Trump’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed new grazing rules that will destroy those gains and deny Tribally managed bison access to federal land in favor of “production-oriented livestock” like cattle. Despite Native consumption of bison meat, which is less fatty than beef, bison are also raised for many nonproduction-oriented purposes. That’s why bison, which are better for prairie ecosystems and land conservation than cattle, don’t meet the commodity-producing requirement. The BLM wants to take away indigenous stewardship of public lands and concentrate management in the hands of the livestock industry instead. The Trump administration wants anti-bison cattle ranchers and private corporations to exploit the land for profit. Buffalo will be evicted from tens of thousands of acres of federal land and replaced with cows so corporations can benefit from highly discounted grazing leases offered by the BLM. It’s worth potentially millions of dollars in increased profits as the BLM charges a per-animal fee that is about 90 percent cheaper than fees charged on privately owned land. But people power has stopped big money interests before, and we must try to do it again. To protect our rights and sovereignty, but most importantly, protect Mother Earth and all her animals from corporate greed, we must stop this proposal while we still can.
