"description": "The New York City Council and New York State Legislature are considering bills that would limit our ability to protest and increase surveillance. The New York City Council is considering two bills – Intro 001 and Intro 0175 – that would severely limit the ability to protest by permitting the NYPD to establish and maintain ‘buffer zones’around educational institutions and places of worship. The Council is also considering another bill – Intro 0327 – that would provide private schools with public money to pay for increased security and surveillance. The New York State Legislature is considering two bills, S.8599 and A.9335, that would severely limit the ability to protest by creating 25-foot buffer zones around reproductive health care facilities and places of religious worship. Governor Hochul has also included a similar provision in her Executive Budget. Demonstrating within these zones would be criminalized as a Class E felony, punishable by up to four years in prison. These bills expand the capacity of the NYPD to police and surveil Black, brown, and immigrant New Yorkers, jeopardizing the safety of protestors exercising their first amendment rights and students attending school. In a time of rising repression, it is crucial that our representatives safeguard the right to protest, not erode it. Use this tool to write to your city councilors and state legislators and urge them to vote no on these bills.",
