Water and wastewater utilities across at least a dozen states have reported cyber incidents, and communities have already been forced to switch systems to manual controls, respond to pressure disruptions, and issue precautionary boil-water advisories. The danger has been building for years. Many local water systems operate with aging technology, limited cybersecurity staff, and internet-connected equipment that hackers can exploit. Federal officials repeatedly warned about these vulnerabilities, but efforts to impose stronger protections stalled while critical infrastructure remained exposed. Now, Donald Trump is turning a national-security threat into another political fight. When Minnesota water systems were attacked, Trump blamed Gov. Tim Walz and the state without evidence instead of demonstrating the leadership needed to protect critical infrastructure. States cannot afford to follow his example. Governors and state legislators can act. They can establish strong cybersecurity requirements for water utilities, fund upgrades for small and rural systems, require regular risk assessments and incident reporting, strengthen emergency-response planning, and provide state agencies with the staff and resources necessary to help communities defend themselves.
